About Me

I am a psychologist in private practice in Franklin, Michigan, which is in Oakland County.  I am affiliated with a group practice, Psychological Institutes of Michigan, P.C.  Psychological Institutes of Michigan was the first mental health practice in the state of Michigan owned by psychologists.

For more than twenty-five years, I have treated children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families.   I enjoy the variety that comes from treating patients at different ages and with different kinds of problems.  From this varied and challenging case load, I learn every day.

I have worked in many different settings as a psychologist, which has broadened my knowledge of my field, and my knowledge of the many kinds of problems for which people seek assistance.  I have worked in outpatient clinics, in inpatient settings (for adults, adolescents and children), both in psychiatric and substance abuse treatment centers.

In addition to my work as a psychotherapist, I also specialize in psychological assessment, and I have performed many psychological evaluations.  These include therapeutic assessments, and assessments for legal matters (child custody evaluations, psychological evaluations in civil and criminal matters).

For the past several years, I have actively been engaged in therapeutic assessment, a form of assessment in which the assessment is itself an intervention in the life of a person, couple, or family, and is designed and performed so as to have an impact on people’s lives.  I do these assessments as part of the Michigan Institute for Collaborative Assessment.  I am a member of the Society for Personality Assessment and I am working on certification through the Therapeutic Assessment Institute.

I have often worked with divorced families, to reduce the level of conflict to which their children are exposed.  My role is that of a mediator, family therapist or parenting coordinator.  I have been a volunteer presenter for the SMILE Program (Start Making It Livable for Everyone), a mandatory program in Oakland County for divorcing persons who have children under 18.

I have served on the boards of the Michigan Psychological Association, and the Michigan Psychological Association Foundation, the Council of Representatives of the American Psychological Association.  I am also a trustee and Past President of the Michigan Inter-Professional Association on Marriage, Divorce, and the Family , a non-profit organization consisting of legal, mental-health and court professionals who meet regularly to combine their skills, knowledge, and insights with the goal of strengthening family life.

I have been appointed as Parenting Coordinator in well over a hundred cases over the past fifteen years.  I have presented on parenting coordination to many organizations, including:  the Michigan Inter-professional Association on Marriage Divorce and the Family (MIPA), the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (Michigan Chapter), the Oakland and Wayne County Circuit Court judges and referees, the Michigan Bar Association- Family Law Section, the Oakland County Bar Association, and the Michigan Trial Lawyers Association.  I also helped (on a court-MIPA task force) to develop the order used in Oakland County to appoint parenting coordinators.

I obtained a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Michigan, granted in 1984.  I participated in a joint program in Clinical and Developmental Psychology.  This program trained Ph.D. students to understand and perform research into normal development as well as to assess and treat patients with psychological disorders.

In 1999 I was named “Distinguished Psychologist” by the Michigan Psychological Association.  In 2001 I was the President of the Michigan Psychological Association.  In 2007 I received the association’s Beth Clark Service Award.
